You’re looking up car insurance discounts in Texas because the bill went up, or because an ad promised a discount the law supposedly requires. Texas drivers can ask about many discount types, but none is automatic and none has a standard size.

This guide covers the types the Texas Department of Insurance (TDI) and the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) name, what Texas law says, and how to check your own policy. For the multi-policy question, see our guide to bundling home and auto in Texas.

What car insurance discounts are available to Texas drivers?

The short answer: Texas insurers may offer discounts for a good driving record, more than one car, anti-theft devices, low mileage, good students and other policies with the same company, and each company decides which it offers.

TDI’s auto discount tips (last updated December 11, 2025) name these common types. Its auto insurance guide sets the rule behind all of them: “Each company decides what discounts to offer and the amount of the discount.” Treat the list as questions to ask, not a menu every policy includes.

Driving record

Good driver

Tied to no claims and a good driving record (TDI).

Training

Defensive driving class

Some discounts are for taking one (TDI).

Vehicle

Anti-theft and safety gear

Anti-theft devices (TDI); airbags and other safety equipment (NAIC).

Usage

Low mileage

Driving fewer miles (TDI).

Household

More than one car or policy

Multi-car, or a home or renters policy with the same company (TDI).

Students

Good grades

Students who get good grades (TDI).

TDI’s tips for lowering a car insurance bill add automatic payments and going paperless, a driving monitoring program, and certain occupations or group memberships. We don’t publish discount percentages: availability, eligibility and amounts vary by company and policy, and discounts aren’t available in all situations.

Does Texas law require car insurance companies to give discounts?

The short answer: No, according to TDI, which said in February 2025 that no state law or rule mandates insurance discounts or puts a time limit on them, so each company sets its own.

TDI answered after Texans called about ads claiming the law required discounts for older drivers or people who drive less, sometimes only if they acted fast. In a February 11, 2025 TDI post, Insurance Commissioner Cassie Brown said, “Insurance companies may offer discounts, but no state law or rule mandates discounts or puts a time limit on them,” and added, “Such claims are misleading.” Whether a company offers a discount, and on what terms, is that company’s choice.

Seen an ad for a “state-required” discount?TDI warned that personal information you give in response to such an ad might go to a third-party vendor that sells it to others. Before you type in your details, call your agent or TDI’s Help Line at 800-252-3439.

Which car insurance discounts depend on how you drive?

The short answer: A clean record, a defensive driving class, low mileage and a driving monitoring program are the driver-based discount types TDI names, and whether any applies depends on your company and policy.

Good record. “Companies see good drivers as less of a risk,” TDI says, and TDI’s guide to how auto and home insurance costs are calculated lists your claims history among rating factors.

Defensive driving. TDI’s car insurance tips say, “Some discounts are for taking a defensive driving class or having a good driving record.” Before you enroll, ask whether your company gives one, which courses it accepts and how long it lasts.

Low mileage and monitoring. “If you don’t drive much, your chances of staying accident-free are better,” TDI says. If you now work from home, or your commute on I-20 or SH-360 got shorter, tell your company. Before joining a driving monitoring program, ask what it records and how the results are used.

Which discounts depend on your car and your household?

The short answer: Anti-theft devices, safety equipment, insuring more than one car and having a home or renters policy with the same company are the vehicle and household discount types TDI and the NAIC name.

“Cars with more anti-theft devices are less likely to be stolen,” TDI notes. The NAIC’s page on insuring a teen driver lists “Airbags or other safety equipment” and “Anti-theft devices” among discounts some companies may offer.

TDI adds, “You also might get a discount for having other policies with the same company, like a home or renters policy.” Since September 1, 2025, Texas law (SB 213) bars making your home policy depend on buying auto coverage from the same insurer or an affiliated one, or the reverse; see our home and auto bundling guide. Homeowners have their own list of discounts to ask about on a Texas home policy.

What discounts can Texas families ask about for teen and student drivers?

The short answer: Ask about good student and driver education discounts, and tell your company where a student keeps the car, because TDI says rates are based on where a car is usually located.

“If you have high school or college students who get good grades, let your company know,” TDI says. The NAIC lists “Good student driver under age 25” and “Participation in driver education courses” among discounts some companies may offer. TDI’s auto guide adds two school rules of thumb:

  • Where the car lives. “Tell your insurance company if you have a child living in another city for school.”
  • Who stays listed. “Some companies require you to keep young drivers on your policy, even if they’re away at school.”

When we review a household with a new driver, we start with who drives which car and where each is parked overnight, then ask about student discounts. For UT Arlington families, our guide for UTA students living off campus covers renters and car questions together.

How do credit and billing choices affect a Texas car insurance price?

The short answer: Credit can be a rating factor in Texas, and under SB 1644 you or your agent can ask at renewal for a re-rate, while automatic payments and going paperless are discount types TDI lists.

36 months
at least that often, an insurer that uses credit scoring must review and update an insured’s credit report and reassess the rating, for Texas policies delivered, issued for delivery, or renewed on or after January 1, 2026. Sources: SB 1644 enrolled bill (Insurance Code § 559.058); TDI Bulletin B-0012-25.

TDI lists “Your credit score” among auto rating factors, and an insurer may not deny, cancel or nonrenew a personal policy solely on the basis of credit information. SB 1644 also lets you or your agent ask, at renewal, for the policy to be re-underwritten and re-rated, no more than once every 12 months. Exceptions apply, such as when you’re already in the most favorably priced tier. Our guide to what car insurance costs in Texas covers the other price factors.

Is a higher deductible the same as a car insurance discount?

The short answer: No, because a higher collision or comprehensive deductible may lower your premium but raises what you pay on every claim, while a discount lowers the price of the same coverage.

“The higher your deductible, the lower your premium,” TDI’s car insurance tips say. That’s a trade, not a discount, and in North Texas it matters most for comprehensive, which TDI’s April 2026 storm tips say covers damage “from flood, hail, fire, and wind.”

Illustrative example · not a quote A spring hailstorm in south Arlington dents two cars in the same driveway. What the household pays before either claim is paid:
  • $500 comprehensive deductible on each car: 2 × $500 = $1,000.
  • $1,000 deductible on each car: 2 × $1,000 = $2,000.
The higher deductible may lower the premium by an amount that depends on your company and policy, and it adds $1,000 to that one storm’s cost to you.
Keep the coverage that protects youTexas requires at least 30/60/25 liability, and TDI says those minimums “might be too low if you cause a multi-vehicle accident or the other driver’s car is totaled.” See what Texas requires on every car and our statewide guide to choosing Texas car coverage.

How do you check which car insurance discounts you already have?

The short answer: Read the discounts listed on your auto declarations page, then ask before each renewal which others you might qualify for and what proof each one needs.

TDI’s guide to reading your declarations page says the page lists your discounts and advises asking your agent each year about new ones. Its discount tips add: “Your company should sign you up for the discounts you qualify for, but it never hurts to ask about them and make sure.” Robinson Legacy Partners is a local agency in south Arlington, just off I-20, and we can go through the page with you, with help in 7 languages.

  1. Pull your declarations page

It lists your drivers, cars, coverages, deductibles, premium and discounts applied.

  2. Note what changed this year

A new car or driver, a move, a student leaving for school, a shorter commute.

  3. Ask which discount types your company offers

Driver, vehicle, household, student and billing discounts vary by company and policy.

  4. Ask what proof each one needs

For example, a course certificate, a report card or a mileage reading.

  5. Keep your limits where they belong

A discount should lower the price of the same coverage, not replace liability or uninsured motorist protection.

  6. Ask about a credit re-rate at renewal

If your company uses credit, SB 1644 lets you or your agent ask at renewal, no more than once every 12 months, with exceptions.

The bottom line

Texas drivers can ask about many car insurance discount types, from good driver and defensive driving to multi-car, anti-theft, low mileage and good student. Each company decides which it offers and what they’re worth, and TDI says no state law requires any of them. The lasting win is knowing what’s on your declarations page.

Texas car insurance discounts FAQ

What car insurance discounts should I ask about in Texas?

Start with the types the Texas Department of Insurance names: good driver, defensive driving class, more than one car, anti-theft devices, low mileage, good students, and other policies such as home or renters with the same company. TDI also lists automatic payments, going paperless, a driving monitoring program, and certain occupations or group memberships. Each company decides which discounts it offers and the amount, so availability, eligibility and amounts vary. Bring your declarations page and ask which apply to you.

Does a defensive driving course lower car insurance in Texas?

It can, if your company offers that discount. TDI says some discounts are for taking a defensive driving class, and TDI’s commissioner said in 2025 that no state law or rule mandates discounts or puts a time limit on them. Before you sign up, ask your company whether it gives a discount for a course, which courses it accepts, how long the discount lasts and what certificate it needs. If it doesn’t, the course may still help your driving; just don’t count on a price change.

Can a Texas student get a good student discount on car insurance?

Ask your company. TDI says that if you have high school or college students who get good grades, let your company know, and the NAIC lists a good student discount for drivers under 25 among those some companies may offer. Each company sets its own rules and proof. If the student lives in another city for school, tell your company that too; TDI notes some companies require young drivers to stay on your policy even while away at school.

Can I ask my insurer to re-rate my credit at renewal in Texas?

Yes, if your company uses credit scoring. Under SB 1644 (2025), for policies delivered, issued for delivery, or renewed on or after January 1, 2026, you or your agent can ask at renewal for the policy to be re-underwritten and re-rated, no more than once every 12 months. The company must also review and update your credit report at least every 36 months. Exceptions apply, for example if you’re already in the most favorably priced tier or the company doesn’t use credit.

How do I find out which discounts are already on my car insurance?

Look at your auto declarations page; TDI’s guide to reading it says the page lists the discounts applied. TDI also says your company should sign you up for the discounts you qualify for, but it never hurts to ask about them and make sure. If a discount seems missing after a change, such as a new car or a shorter commute, ask before renewal. Our team can walk through the page with you: call (817) 262-5300, Monday through Friday, 8:30 to 5.
