What makes driving in Mansfield different?

The short answer: Mansfield is a suburban city in the south-central Metroplex that crosses three county lines, with two north-south highways carrying most trips toward Arlington, Grand Prairie and DFW Airport.

The City of Mansfield’s FY 2025 budget describes a city of 36.69 square miles, about 23% still undeveloped, with a population the city projected would approach 91,546 by the end of the 2024–25 fiscal year. That’s the city’s own projection, not a Census count. A few things shape how Mansfield drives:

  • US-287 and SH-360, which the city says “both run north and south through the City,” linking Mansfield with Arlington, Grand Prairie and DFW Airport.
  • Three counties. Tarrant County’s archives describe Mansfield as lying “within the lines of Tarrant, Ellis and Johnson Counties”, so neighbors on the same commute can live in different counties.

When we review a Mansfield policy, we ask where each car goes every weekday and how far, not just which garage it sleeps in.

How often do crashes happen around Mansfield?

The short answer: TxDOT counted 40 alcohol-involved crashes inside Mansfield in 2024, none fatal; its larger county totals include Fort Worth and Arlington, so they aren’t Mansfield figures.

40
alcohol-involved crashes inside Mansfield’s city limits in 2024, two with suspected serious injuries and none fatal, according to TxDOT’s DUI (Alcohol) Crashes and Injuries, Cities and Towns 2024 report, data as of April 9, 2025.

That count covers only crashes TxDOT classifies as alcohol-involved, from Texas Peace Officer’s Crash Reports. It isn’t Mansfield’s total for all crashes.

TxDOT also publishes county totals: 28,074 reported crashes in Tarrant County in 2024, 3,861 in Ellis and 2,734 in Johnson. Those are not Mansfield figures. Tarrant County’s total includes Fort Worth and Arlington, and TxDOT’s city report lists 12,865 crashes in Fort Worth and 5,317 in Arlington that year, so we don’t add the counties together or read them as a Mansfield rate.

A crash on a 287 frontage road can involve two or three cars drawing on the same liability limits. That’s why we spend more time on limits than on price.

What car insurance does Texas require of Mansfield drivers?

The short answer: Mansfield has no separate rule in any of its three counties; you need Texas’s minimum of 30/60/25 liability, and your insurer must include PIP and offer uninsured motorist coverage unless you reject them in writing.

That’s $30,000 for injuries per person, $60,000 per accident and $25,000 for property damage, according to TDI’s auto insurance guide and Transportation Code § 601.072. Under Insurance Code chapter 1952, personal injury protection (PIP) and uninsured/underinsured motorist (UM/UIM) coverage come with the policy unless the named insured rejects them in writing.

The county line doesn’t change any of that. What we watch is UM/UIM: TxDMV estimated 11.87% of Texas drivers were uninsured as of September 2025, roughly one in eight, according to its TexasSure page. If you’re new to Texas or just want the legal checklist, our explainer on what car insurance Texas requires walks through proof of insurance and penalties.

Which Mansfield weather and theft risks fall on your own policy?

The short answer: Hail, creek flooding and theft damage your own car, and the coverage that usually pays for all three is comprehensive, not liability.

Hail. Texas led the nation with 902 major hail events (one inch or larger) in 2025, according to the Insurance Information Institute, citing NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center. TDI’s April 2026 storm tips say comprehensive “covers damage to your car from flood, hail, fire, and wind.”

High water. Walnut Creek, which the weather service gauges near Mansfield, can flood. On October 26, 2023, the National Weather Service in Fort Worth issued a flood warning for Walnut Creek near Mansfield, reporting that “moderate flooding is occurring and major flooding is forecast.” The NWS warns that “just 12 inches of rushing water” can carry away most cars.

Theft. Comprehensive also covers a stolen car, according to TDI. Mansfield is also home base for a theft task force on TxDMV’s list of Motor Vehicle Crime Prevention Authority grantees: the Mansfield Tri-County Auto Burglary and Theft Prevention Task Force, created September 1, 2011, which serves the cities of Mansfield and Burleson and unincorporated parts of Johnson and Ellis counties. Belongings stolen from a car usually fall under homeowners or renters coverage, not auto.

How much liability coverage makes sense on US-287 and SH-360?

The short answer: Enough to cover a multi-car highway crash with more than one injured person, which for many Mansfield households means limits well above 30/60/25, because anything past your limits can come back to you.

TDI puts it plainly: “If you don’t have enough coverage, you’ll have to pay the difference yourself.”

Illustrative example · not a quote Merging onto US-287 at rush hour, you clip a pickup, which spins into a second car. You’re at fault. Medical bills: $42,000 for the pickup’s driver and $15,000 for the other driver ($57,000). Vehicle repairs: $31,000 for the pickup and $14,000 for the car ($45,000).
  • With 30/60/25 limits, the pickup driver’s injuries are capped at $30,000, so the policy pays $45,000 toward injuries and $25,000 toward property: $70,000 in all, leaving $32,000 ($12,000 + $20,000) that could come back to you.
  • With 100/300/100 limits, every amount falls inside its limit, covering all $102,000 in this example.
How any claim is paid depends on your policy and the facts.

Our view: match UM/UIM to your liability limits.

How much does car insurance cost in Mansfield?

The short answer: No regulator publishes a Mansfield average, but the NAIC put Texas’s 2024 average auto expenditure at $1,578.45 a year, above the $1,431.63 national figure; that’s a statewide average, not a quote.

Those figures come from the NAIC’s 2024 Auto Insurance Database Average Premium Supplement (released October 2026), the latest available. It also put Texas’s combined average premium at $1,917.05 and its comprehensive average at $455.00, against $283.15 nationally. The NAIC doesn’t say why, but comprehensive is the coverage that pays for hail. For what drives those statewide numbers, see our breakdown of how much car insurance costs in Texas.

Look past the premiumA lower price can mean minimum limits or no comprehensive. In a hail-prone suburb, read the limits and the comprehensive deductible before the price.

What moves a Mansfield driver’s premium?

The short answer: Your driving record, where you live and how much you drive, who’s on the policy, the car, your credit and the limits and deductibles you pick, according to TDI; each company weighs them its own way.

Companies file their own rates with TDI, according to its guide to how premiums are calculated. In Mansfield, the factors look like this:

Driving record

Tickets, crashes and claims

TDI lists your driving record and claims history first.

Location and mileage

Your address and your commute

A move across Mansfield or a new daily drive up SH-360 can change the price.

Drivers and car

Who drives what

A new teen driver, a second household car or a pricier vehicle all count.

Your choices

Limits and deductibles

Higher deductibles generally lower the premium and raise what you pay after a hailstorm.

Each company sets its own discounts, TDI notes, so ask which may fit your household, such as multi-car or bundling with your home policy.

New for 2026 policiesFor policies issued or renewed after January 1, 2026, SB 458 requires an appraisal provision in personal auto policies, and under SB 1644 insurers that use credit must generally refresh an insured’s credit information at least every three years, according to TDI Bulletin B-0012-25.

How do you get a car insurance quote in Mansfield?

The short answer: Start from your current declarations page, settle your limits and deductibles first, list every driver and car, then review the quote with a licensed agent who can explain each line.

Here’s the order we use with Mansfield drivers, by phone, online or at our office on Highlander Blvd:

  1. Pull your current declarations page

It lists your drivers, cars, coverages, limits, deductibles and premium: your starting point.

  2. Set liability and UM/UIM limits before anything else

Pick limits that fit what you own and a multi-car highway crash, then match uninsured motorist coverage to them.

  3. Pick a comprehensive deductible you could pay after a hailstorm

Choose an amount you could cover from savings the week after a storm.

  4. List every driver, car and commute accurately

Include teen drivers, students home on breaks and long daily drives toward Arlington, Fort Worth or the airport.

  5. Go through the quote line by line with a licensed agent

Ask what each coverage pays, what it doesn’t, and which discounts may apply.

The bottom line

Car insurance in Mansfield starts with the Texas floor of 30/60/25 liability, but Mansfield’s highways and weather decide what that floor leaves uncovered. Busy commuter highways like US-287 and SH-360 argue for liability limits well above the minimum and uninsured motorist coverage to match; hail, Walnut Creek high water and theft argue for comprehensive with a deductible you could actually pay.

Mansfield car insurance FAQ

Do Mansfield drivers in Johnson or Ellis County follow different insurance rules?

No. Every Mansfield driver follows the same state rules, whether they live on the Tarrant, Johnson or Ellis County side of the city: liability coverage of at least $30,000 for injuries per person, $60,000 per accident and $25,000 for property damage, according to the Texas Department of Insurance and Transportation Code section 601.072. Your insurer must also include personal injury protection and offer uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage, which you can decline only in writing. Lenders usually require collision and comprehensive on a financed car.

What is the average car insurance premium for Mansfield drivers?

No regulator or official public source publishes a Mansfield average premium, so we can’t give you an honest city figure. Texas as a whole runs above the national figure: the NAIC put Texas’s 2024 average auto expenditure at $1,578.45, against $1,431.63 nationally. Where you live is a rating factor, according to the Texas Department of Insurance, so your Mansfield address, commute, drivers and car all shape your price. Averages are context, not a quote.

What does TxDOT crash data show for the Mansfield area?

Inside Mansfield’s city limits, the Texas Department of Transportation counted 40 alcohol-involved crashes in 2024, two with suspected serious injuries and none fatal, based on Texas Peace Officer’s Crash Reports processed as of April 9, 2025. TxDOT also reports county totals, such as 28,074 crashes in Tarrant County, 3,861 in Ellis and 2,734 in Johnson, but those aren’t Mansfield figures, because Tarrant’s total includes Fort Worth and Arlington. Busy US-287 and SH-360 traffic is one reason we suggest liability limits well above the state minimum.

Will my car insurance pay if my car floods in Mansfield?

Usually only if you carry comprehensive coverage. The Texas Department of Insurance says comprehensive covers damage to your car from flood, hail, fire and wind, after your deductible; liability alone pays nothing toward your own car, and any claim depends on your policy and the facts. Walnut Creek does flood: the National Weather Service in Fort Worth issued a flood warning for it near Mansfield in October 2023. If water covers the road, turn around.

Where is your office, and can Mansfield drivers get a review without visiting?

Our office is at 700 Highlander Blvd, Suite 405, in south Arlington near I-20, open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mansfield drivers can visit, call (817) 262-5300 or send their ZIP through this page. A licensed agent will go through your limits, deductibles, drivers and cars with you, in English, Spanish, Arabic, Hindi, Punjabi, Urdu or Coptic, and explain what each coverage would and wouldn’t pay.
