The Short Version

## Moving to Arlington, in 60 seconds

* **Moving to Arlington, Texas means reviewing insurance before the truck arrives, with deadlines after.** TxDMV gives new residents 30 days to register a vehicle, and DPS allows 90 days on an out-of-state license.
* **Texas wants Texas-minimum proof.** To register, TxDMV asks for proof of liability insurance meeting Texas minimums: 30/60/25.
* **Arlington is in Tarrant County, an emissions county.** Safety inspections ended for noncommercial cars on January 1, 2025, but emissions tests didn’t.
* **Moving day has its own gaps.** A mover’s liability limit isn’t insurance, and your policy may only partly cover belongings in transit.
* **Do this:** book a free review with our south Arlington team before the truck arrives.

Moving to Arlington, Texas means insurance to review before the truck arrives, and a stack of deadlines after it, several of which run through your insurance. The county tax office wants Texas proof of coverage before it registers your car. Your landlord may want a renters policy before you get keys, and your lender wants homeowners insurance before closing.

Here’s the checklist our south Arlington team walks new neighbors through. Moving from elsewhere in Texas? Skip the new-resident steps. ## What insurance should you review when moving to Arlington, Texas?

**The short answer:** Review your car insurance first because Texas registration depends on it, then your renters or homeowners start date, belongings in transit, flood risk at the new address, your hail deductible, and life insurance beneficiaries.

13.3%

of Arlington residents age 1 and older didn’t live in the same house a year earlier. That’s our math from the 86.7% “same house 1 year ago” figure in [U.S. Census QuickFacts](https://www.census.gov/quickfacts/fact/table/arlingtoncitytexas/PST045224) (American Community Survey 5-year estimates, 2020–2024), and it includes moves within Arlington.

Sources: [TxDMV, New to Texas](https://www.txdmv.gov/motorists/new-to-texas); [Texas DPS, Moving to Texas](https://www.dps.texas.gov/section/driver-license/moving-texas); [Texas DPS, license changes](https://www.dps.texas.gov/section/driver-license/how-change-information-your-driver-license-or-id-card); [FEMA FloodSmart](https://www.floodsmart.gov/get-insured/buy-a-policy). Checked October 2026.

| Task | Timing | Insurance tie-in |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Register your vehicle (new residents) | **Within 30 days** of moving here | Needs proof of insurance meeting Texas minimums. |
| Emissions test (Tarrant County) | **Before** registering | Bring your insurance card to the test, too. |
| Texas driver license (new residents) | **Within 90 days** of moving here | DPS asks for registration and insurance proof for each vehicle you own. |
| License address (moving within Texas) | **Within 30 days** of moving | Tell your insurer the new address too. |
| Flood insurance, if you want it | Generally starts **30 days** after purchase | No wait if bought while making a mortgage. |

When new neighbors call us, the first thing we ask isn’t the price. It’s the date the truck arrives and the date you get keys.

## What do new Texas residents need for their cars, and by when?

**The short answer:** Texas-minimum insurance, a passing emissions test in Tarrant County, and Texas registration within 30 days of moving, then a Texas driver license within 90 days, in that order.

According to [TxDMV’s New to Texas page](https://www.txdmv.gov/motorists/new-to-texas), “You have 30 days from the time you move here to register your vehicle in the state.” Its [out-of-state vehicle page](https://www.txdmv.gov/motorists/buying-or-selling-a-vehicle/out-of-state-and-foreign-vehicles) says to bring “proof of liability insurance meeting State of Texas minimum requirements” to your county tax office.

**Inspections changed in 2025.** House Bill 3297 ended safety inspections for noncommercial vehicles beginning January 1, 2025, and owners now pay a $7.50 inspection program replacement fee at registration instead, according to [Texas DPS](https://www.dps.texas.gov/node/5839). Emissions testing continues in Tarrant and the other emissions counties, where [DPS tests](https://www.dps.texas.gov/section/vehicle-inspection/inspection-criteria-emission-inspection) gas-powered vehicles 2 through 24 years old, so most cars registered at an Arlington address need a passing emissions test before registration.

**Then the license.** Texas DPS says new residents can drive on a valid out-of-state license for up to 90 days. When you apply, DPS asks for current Texas registration and proof of insurance for each vehicle you own.

**Reviewed by Clarence Robinson II.** Clarence is an Allstate agent and the owner of Robinson Legacy Partners in south Arlington. He's an entrepreneur with more than 20 years in business who became an Allstate agent in 2024, and his team helps Texas families in seven languages.
"Insurance works best when it's understood."

## Will your out-of-state car insurance work after you move to Texas?

**The short answer:** Don’t assume it will, because Texas registration needs proof of coverage meeting Texas minimums and your new address changes how a policy is rated, so call your current company before you move.

Texas sets minimum liability at **30/60/25**: $30,000 for each injured person, up to $60,000 per accident, and $25,000 for property damage, according to the [Texas Department of Insurance](https://www.tdi.texas.gov/pubs/consumer/cb020.html). A policy written for another state may carry different limits; the card you hand the tax office must show Texas minimums.

Address matters for price, too. TDI lists [where you live and how much you drive](https://www.tdi.texas.gov/consumer/how-are-your-auto-and-homeowners-insurance-costs-calculated.html) among the factors companies use to set auto rates, so your company needs to hear about the move.

Don’t let it lapse**Keep your current policy until the Texas one starts.** Ask your current company whether it can move your policy to your Arlington address. If not, start Texas coverage first, then cancel the old policy.

The minimum is a floor, not a recommendation; our [guide to car insurance in Arlington](https://www.robinsonlegacypartners.com/blog/auto-insurance/car-insurance-in-arlington-texas-coverage-costs-and-quotes/) covers local crash data and how much liability to consider.

## What isn’t covered while your things are on the truck or in storage?

**The short answer:** More than most people expect, because a mover’s liability limit isn’t insurance and renters or homeowners policies may give only limited coverage in transit, with your deductible applying.

TxDMV, which regulates household goods movers in Texas, says in its [moving rights brochure](https://www.txdmv.gov/sites/default/files/body-files/hhgbrochure.pdf) (January 2025) that “the mover’s limits on liability are not the same as insurance,” and that a mover and customer could agree to limit liability to 60 cents per pound per item. For interstate moves, the [FMCSA](https://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/protect-your-move/understanding-valuation-and-insurance-options) says the no-extra-charge option, Released Value Protection, holds the mover responsible for no more than 60 cents per pound per article; Full Value Protection costs extra.

Your own policy may help, but only partly. The [NAIC](https://content.naic.org/article/consumer-insight-leaving-home-insurance-considerations-move) has said homeowners and renters insurance will likely provide limited coverage for belongings in transit, with the deductible applying, and the [Insurance Information Institute](https://www.iii.org/article/renters-insurance) notes most renters policies cover belongings off-premises with dollar limits.

On the truck

### Mover’s liability

Often limited by weight unless you agree to more in writing.

In storage

### Off-premises limits

Ask what your policy pays for items in a storage unit.

Rental truck

### Driver liability

The NAIC notes some personal auto policies may cover your liability in a rented truck, but many don’t.

Between addresses

### Which policy applies?

Know which address each policy lists on every day of the move.

Illustrative example · not a quote
The movers drop a **25-pound** TV that cost **$900**:

* At **60 cents per pound**, the mover owes **$15** (25 × $0.60).
* With a **$1,000** renters deductible, the policy pays ** nothing** on that TV, because the loss is below the deductible.

Real outcomes depend on your mover’s contract, your policy and the facts of the loss.

## When should your renters or homeowners policy start in Arlington?

**The short answer:** Start the new policy on the day you take possession, the lease start or the closing date, and keep the old one until you’ve fully moved out.

About 46% of Arlington’s occupied homes are rented (our math from the Census owner-occupied rate of 54.3%, 2020–2024), so many newcomers start with a lease. The [Texas Department of Insurance](https://www.tdi.texas.gov/tips/renters-insurance.html) says renters insurance isn’t required by law, but some landlords might require it. See our [Arlington renters insurance guide](https://www.robinsonlegacypartners.com/blog/renters-insurance/renters-insurance-in-arlington-texas-coverage-costs-and-quotes/). Students renting near campus can use our [checklist for UT Arlington students living off campus](https://www.robinsonlegacypartners.com/blog/local-guides/what-insurance-should-ut-arlington-students-review-before-living-off-campus/).

Buying? TDI’s [home insurance guide](https://www.tdi.texas.gov/pubs/consumer/cb025.html) notes Texas law doesn’t require home insurance, but lenders do, so the policy should begin on the closing date. Our [home-buying insurance review](https://www.robinsonlegacypartners.com/blog/local-guides/buying-a-home-in-arlington-what-should-your-insurance-review-include/) covers rebuild cost and roof terms. Buying a condo? See our [guide to condo coverage in Arlington](https://www.robinsonlegacypartners.com/blog/condo-insurance/condo-insurance-in-arlington-texas-coverage-costs-and-quotes/).

Don’t cancel the old policy until the last box is out and the keys are returned. A short overlap is usually easier to live with than a gap.

## How do you check flood risk at your new Arlington address?

**The short answer:** Look up the exact address on FEMA’s Flood Map Service Center and the City of Arlington’s flood hazard zones page, and decide on flood coverage early, since most homeowners and renters policies don’t cover flood.

Johnson, Rush, Village and Fish creeks run through Arlington, and houses a few streets apart can sit in different flood zones. Enter the full address at [FEMA’s Flood Map Service Center](https://msc.fema.gov/portal/home), then check the City’s [flood hazard zones page](https://www.arlingtontx.gov/Government/Departments/Department-Directory/Stormwater-Management/Floodplain-Administration/Flood-Hazard-Zones).

[FEMA’s FloodSmart](https://www.floodsmart.gov/get-insured/buy-a-policy) says a flood policy goes into effect 30 days after purchase. Buyers get an exception: no wait when the policy is bought while making or renewing a mortgage.

Renting? Read the flood noticeTexas Property Code [§ 92.0135](https://law.justia.com/codes/texas/property-code/title-8/chapter-92/subchapter-a/section-92-0135/), in effect since January 1, 2022, generally requires landlords to tell you in writing, at or before lease signing, whether they know the home is in a 100-year floodplain. Since a 2025 amendment, that notice can be in the lease, an addendum or a separate document, signed by both sides. [TDI](https://tdi.texas.gov/blog/texas-law-encourages-renters-to-buy-flood-coverage.html) summarizes the rule for renters.

Creek watersheds and the City’s flood-policy discount are in our [Arlington home coverage guide](https://www.robinsonlegacypartners.com/blog/home-insurance/home-insurance-in-arlington-texas-coverage-costs-and-quotes/) and on our [flood insurance page](https://www.robinsonlegacypartners.com/flood-insurance).

## Why should newcomers check their hail deductible before spring?

**The short answer:** North Texas hail can hit your roof and car in one storm, and many home policies use a percentage wind and hail deductible, so know yours in dollars before spring.

The [Insurance Information Institute](https://www.iii.org/fact-statistic/facts-statistics-hail), citing NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center, reports Texas had 902 major hail events (one inch or larger) in 2025, the most of any state. On a home, the wind and hail deductible is often a percentage of your dwelling limit: 2% of a $300,000 limit is $6,000 out of pocket before the policy pays. See [how percentage hail deductibles work in Texas](https://www.robinsonlegacypartners.com/blog/home-insurance/how-do-wind-and-hail-deductibles-work-on-texas-home-insurance/). On a car, TDI’s [spring storm tips](https://www.tdi.texas.gov/news/2026/tdi04162026.html) (April 2026) say comprehensive covers damage from flood, hail, fire and wind; liability alone won’t fix your own car.

## What about life insurance, beneficiaries and extra liability after a move?

**The short answer:** If you changed jobs to move, check whether your work life insurance ended, update your beneficiaries and mailing address, and ask whether your liability limits still fit your new household.

TDI’s [life insurance guide](https://www.tdi.texas.gov/pubs/consumer/cb018.html) notes that group life coverage through an employer typically ends when you leave the job. The [Insurance Information Institute](https://www.iii.org/article/what-beneficiary) suggests reviewing beneficiaries after events such as marriage, divorce or a birth, and every insurer needs your new mailing address. See our [guide to life insurance for Texas families](https://www.robinsonlegacypartners.com/blog/life-insurance/texas-life-insurance-guide-coverage-cost-and-family-decisions/) for how much to consider, and our [Arlington life insurance costs and quotes](https://www.robinsonlegacypartners.com/blog/life-insurance/life-insurance-in-arlington-texas-coverage-costs-and-quotes/) guide for local context.

Then liability. The [NAIC](https://content.naic.org/article/whats-umbrella-policy) describes a personal umbrella policy as extra liability and defense coverage beyond what your auto, home and renters policies cover. If the move brought a bigger home or a teen driver, ask us how your limits line up; our guide to [coordinating home, auto and life coverage](https://www.robinsonlegacypartners.com/blog/local-guides/how-can-arlington-families-coordinate-home-auto-and-life-insurance/) shows how to review them together.

## What’s a simple insurance checklist for your first 30 days in Arlington?

**The short answer:** Line up Texas car coverage, pass emissions and register, set your home or lease start date, check flood risk, then update licenses, beneficiaries and addresses within the state’s deadlines.

Robinson Legacy Partners is an Allstate agency at 700 Highlander Blvd, Suite 405, near I-20. Here’s the order we use:

1. **Set up Texas car insurance before you register**

Get a card showing Texas-minimum coverage at your Arlington address; keep the old policy until it starts.
2. **Pass emissions and register within 30 days**

In Tarrant County, most gas-powered vehicles need a passing emissions test before registration.
3. **Time your renters or homeowners policy to move-in**

Start it on the lease start or closing date.
4. **Protect belongings in transit**

Read the mover’s liability terms, ask about storage limits, and take a home inventory.
5. **Check flood risk at the new address**

Use FEMA’s map and decide early, because of the 30-day wait.
6. **Get your Texas license within 90 days and update everything else**

Then update beneficiaries and your mailing address on every policy.

Already settled? Our [Texas coverage-gap checklist](https://www.robinsonlegacypartners.com/blog/claims-and-policy-reviews/texas-insurance-policy-review-guide-how-do-you-check-for-coverage-gaps/) lists the gaps we check for.

## The bottom line

Moving to Arlington runs on a short clock: 30 days to register your car with Texas-minimum insurance, 90 days to switch your license, and the usual 30-day wait on new flood coverage. The truck, the storage unit and the gap between addresses are where coverage falls short.

Send us your ZIP below or call [(817) 262-5300](tel:+18172625300) before moving day. We’ll set start dates for your car and your home or lease, look up your new address on FEMA’s flood map, and put your hail deductible in dollars. We’re open Monday through Friday, 8:30 to 5, and our team helps in English, Spanish, Arabic, Hindi, Punjabi, Urdu and Coptic.

## Other questions people moving to Arlington ask

### We’re moving from Dallas or Fort Worth to Arlington. What changes for our insurance?

You skip the new-resident steps, but not the address updates. Texas DPS says a license address must be changed within 30 days, and TDI lists where you live among auto rating factors, so tell your insurer too. See our [guide to Arlington auto insurance](https://www.robinsonlegacypartners.com/blog/auto-insurance/car-insurance-in-arlington-texas-coverage-costs-and-quotes/).

### We’re renting near the Entertainment District while we house-hunt in south Arlington. What do we need in between?

A renters policy for the temporary lease protects your belongings and liability while you search. If furniture sits in storage, ask what your policy pays off-premises. Start the homeowners policy on the closing date; our [home-buying review checklist](https://www.robinsonlegacypartners.com/blog/local-guides/buying-a-home-in-arlington-what-should-your-insurance-review-include/) covers the rest.

### Does my renters policy follow me from an apartment near UT Arlington to a new place across town?

Usually the policy can move with you, but the address on it has to change. Give your company the move-in date, and check that your personal property limit still fits what you own now. The [statewide renters coverage guide](https://www.robinsonlegacypartners.com/blog/renters-insurance/texas-renters-insurance-guide-coverage-cost-and-quote-questions/) explains common limits.

### Should we set up home and auto insurance together when we move?

It can simplify things: one review covers your car, your home or lease, and matching liability limits. Insuring both together may lower what you pay, though discounts and eligibility vary. See [how Arlington families coordinate home, auto and life policies](https://www.robinsonlegacypartners.com/blog/local-guides/how-can-arlington-families-coordinate-home-auto-and-life-insurance/).

## Moving to Arlington insurance FAQ

How long do I have to register my car after moving to Arlington, Texas?+

TxDMV says new residents have 30 days from the time they move to Texas to register a vehicle. Arlington is in Tarrant County, an emissions county, so most gas-powered vehicles 2 through 24 years old need a passing emissions test first; safety inspections for noncommercial vehicles ended January 1, 2025. You also need proof of liability insurance meeting Texas minimums, which are 30/60/25. Take your insurance card, title application and documents to the county tax office.

How long can I drive on my out-of-state license after moving to Texas?+

Texas DPS says new residents can drive with a valid, unexpired license from another state for up to 90 days after moving. Before that, you apply for a Texas license and surrender the old one. DPS asks adults for proof of identity, residency, lawful presence and Social Security number, plus current Texas registration and proof of insurance for each vehicle you own. If you don’t own a vehicle, you sign a statement saying so. Register your car first.

Does Tarrant County still require a vehicle inspection in 2026?+

For most cars, only the emissions part. House Bill 3297 ended safety inspections for noncommercial vehicles beginning January 1, 2025, according to Texas DPS, and owners now pay a $7.50 inspection program replacement fee at registration instead. Tarrant County is still an emissions county, where DPS tests gas-powered vehicles 2 through 24 years old before registration, so most Arlington drivers still need that test. Commercial vehicles must still pass a safety inspection. TxDMV’s New to Texas page lists the counties.

Does homeowners or renters insurance cover my belongings during a move?+

Partly, depending on your policy. The NAIC has said homeowners and renters policies will likely provide limited coverage for belongings in transit, and your deductible applies. A mover’s liability isn’t insurance; TxDMV notes a mover and customer could agree to limit it to 60 cents per pound per item.
