The Short Version

## Family insurance in Arlington, in 60 seconds

* **Arlington families can coordinate home, auto and life insurance as one household plan:** three policies, one set of decisions.
* **Line up liability.** Texas requires only 30/60/25 auto liability, and TDI warns that if you don’t have enough coverage, you’ll pay the difference yourself.
* **One storm, two claims.** Hail on the car and hail on the roof go to different policies, each with its own deductible.
* **Size life insurance to the mortgage and the paychecks.** TDI says a basic employer group policy usually pays one or two times salary.
* **Do this:** bring all three declarations pages to one free review with our south Arlington team, with help in 7 languages.

Your home policy renews in March, the cars in August, and the life insurance came with a job you might not keep. That’s how many Arlington families coordinate home, auto and life insurance: they don’t. Each policy can look fine on its own while the gaps sit between them.

This guide treats your household as one plan. For a single-policy gap check, see our [Texas policy review guide](https://www.robinsonlegacypartners.com/blog/claims-and-policy-reviews/texas-insurance-policy-review-guide-how-do-you-check-for-coverage-gaps/).

## Why should Arlington families look at home, auto and life insurance together?

**The short answer:** The three policies protect the same household, money and people, and the costly gaps usually sit between them: liability limits that don’t match, deductibles nobody planned for and life coverage sized years ago.

Arlington households average **2.74 people**, according to the Census Bureau’s [QuickFacts](https://www.census.gov/quickfacts/fact/table/arlingtoncitytexas/PST045224) (American Community Survey 5-year estimates, 2020–2024). Each person touches more than one policy, so we look at all three side by side before changing any one.

Liability

### Savings and home equity

Both policies protect the same assets.

Storms

### The car and the roof

One hailstorm, two policies, two deductibles.

Drivers

### Everyone with a license

An auto question and a liability question.

Income

### The paychecks

Life insurance can keep the mortgage paid if a paycheck stops.

## How should home and auto liability limits line up?

**The short answer:** Set both at levels that reflect what your family would stand to lose in a lawsuit, because the Texas 30/60/25 auto minimum is a floor and anything a claim exceeds can come back to you.

Texas requires at least **$30,000** for injuries per person, **$60,000** per accident and **$25,000** for property damage, according to TDI’s [auto insurance guide](https://www.tdi.texas.gov/pubs/consumer/cb020.html) and [Transportation Code § 601.072](https://statutes.capitol.texas.gov/Docs/TN/htm/TN.601.htm). TDI warns those minimums “might be too low if you cause a multi-vehicle accident or the other driver’s car is totaled.” Your homeowners policy carries its own liability coverage ([TDI home guide](https://www.tdi.texas.gov/pubs/consumer/cb025.html)).

A high limit on the house and the minimum on the cars leaves the side that’s on I-20, I-30 and SH-360 every day at the floor. We suggest matching uninsured motorist coverage to your liability limits; our [statewide car coverage guide](https://www.robinsonlegacypartners.com/blog/auto-insurance/texas-car-insurance-guide-coverage-costs-and-quote-decisions/) explains it.

Illustrative example · not a quote
Your teen merges onto I-30 near the Entertainment District and causes a three-car crash: **$70,000** and **$25,000** in medical bills, plus a totaled SUV worth **$58,000**.

* **50/100/50** limits pay up to $50,000 + $25,000 for injuries and $50,000 for the SUV: **$125,000**. The other **$28,000** could come back to your family.
* **100/300/100** limits cover each amount in this example.

How any claim is paid depends on your policy and the facts.

TDI is blunt: “If you don’t have enough coverage, you’ll have to pay the difference yourself.” That’s the idea behind an umbrella policy. The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) explains that a personal umbrella “can also pay for liability and legal defense costs that exceed the amount your primary insurance policy will pay,” though not damage to your own home or car.

"Insurance works best when it's understood."

## What happens when one hailstorm hits your car and your roof?

**The short answer:** You’re usually looking at two claims on two policies, auto comprehensive for the car and homeowners for the roof, each with its own deductible, so plan for both amounts before storm season.

Texas led the nation with **902** major hail events (one inch or larger) in 2025, according to the [Insurance Information Institute](https://www.iii.org/fact-statistic/facts-statistics-hail), citing NOAA. The storm that dents a car in an Arlington driveway can damage the shingles above it.

Sources: TDI [auto guide](https://www.tdi.texas.gov/pubs/consumer/cb020.html), [April 2026 storm tips](https://www.tdi.texas.gov/news/2026/tdi04162026.html) and [home guide](https://www.tdi.texas.gov/pubs/consumer/cb025.html); FEMA [FloodSmart](https://www.floodsmart.gov/get-insured/buy-a-policy). Your policy’s wording controls.

| One storm | Your car | Your house |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Hail or wind | Comprehensive, after its deductible | Homeowners, after the wind and hail deductible |
| Rising creek water | Comprehensive (TDI lists flood) | Not homeowners Separate flood policy |
| Liability-only car | You pay | No effect |

Illustrative example · not a quote
A south Arlington home has a **$300,000** dwelling limit and a **2%** wind and hail deductible; the SUV has a **$1,000** comprehensive deductible. One storm: **$6,000** on the roof plus **$1,000** on the car, **$7,000** before either policy pays. Real numbers depend on your policies and the adjusters.

Texas law requires a home declarations page to state each deductible in dollars ([Insurance Code § 2301.056](https://statutes.capitol.texas.gov/Docs/IN/htm/IN.2301.htm)). Our [explainer on Texas wind and hail deductibles](https://www.robinsonlegacypartners.com/blog/home-insurance/how-do-wind-and-hail-deductibles-work-on-texas-home-insurance/) shows the math, and our [Arlington homeowners guide](https://www.robinsonlegacypartners.com/blog/home-insurance/home-insurance-in-arlington-texas-coverage-costs-and-quotes/) covers local storms.

## What changes when a teen in your Arlington household starts driving?

**The short answer:** Tell your insurer as soon as your teen gets a learner license, know the Texas provisional license limits for drivers under 18, and revisit liability limits on both the auto and home side.

Under the Department of Public Safety’s [graduated driver license program](https://www.dps.texas.gov/section/driver-license/graduated-driver-license-gdl-program), applicants under 18 hold a learner license for at least six months, supervised by a licensed adult. Provisional license holders under 18 may not:

* carry more than one passenger under 21 who isn’t family;
* drive between midnight and 5 a.m., except for work, school or emergencies;
* use wireless devices while driving, even hands-free.

TDI’s [teen driver tips](https://www.tdi.texas.gov/tips/adding-teen-driver-to-insurance-policy.html) say to tell your company about a teen with a learner license; if you don’t, it could deny a claim, void your policy or refuse to renew. TDI’s auto guide adds that some companies require everyone of driving age at home to be listed.

TxDOT counted **5,317** reported crashes in Arlington in 2024 ([2024 city report](https://www.txdot.gov/content/dam/docs/division/trf/crash-records/2024/14.pdf), as of April 9, 2025). ## How much life insurance should an Arlington family carry next to the mortgage?

**The short answer:** Enough to pay off or keep paying the mortgage and replace the income your family would lose, minus coverage you already have, which TDI frames as debts, income to replace and ongoing bills.

1–2×

your annual salary is the usual death benefit on a basic group life policy through your job, and coverage typically ends when you leave the job, according to TDI’s [life insurance guide](https://www.tdi.texas.gov/pubs/consumer/cb018.html).

The NAIC’s [Life Insurance Buyer’s Guide](https://content.naic.org/sites/default/files/publication-lig-lp-consumer-life.pdf) says the amount “depends on the financial needs that will continue after your death.”

Hypothetical numbers: a **$250,000** mortgage plus **$60,000** a year of income for **10** years is **$850,000**. Subtract a work policy at twice that salary (**$120,000**) and the gap is **$730,000**. Yours will differ.

TDI’s [life insurance tips](https://www.tdi.texas.gov/tips/life-insurance.html) call term life the simplest option for a family with dependents or a mortgage. See our [statewide life insurance guide](https://www.robinsonlegacypartners.com/blog/life-insurance/texas-life-insurance-guide-coverage-cost-and-family-decisions/), our [life insurance guide for Arlington families](https://www.robinsonlegacypartners.com/blog/life-insurance/life-insurance-in-arlington-texas-coverage-costs-and-quotes/) and our [life insurance page](https://www.robinsonlegacypartners.com/life-insurance).

## Who is listed on each of your family’s policies?

**The short answer:** Check the policyholders on the home policy, every driver and car on the auto policy, and the insured and beneficiaries on life coverage, because each list goes stale as families change.

Sources: TDI [declarations page tips](https://www.tdi.texas.gov/tips/how-to-read-your-auto-or-home-insurance-declarations-page.html) (January 2026); NAIC Life Insurance Buyer’s Guide; Insurance Information Institute, [What is a beneficiary?](https://www.iii.org/article/what-beneficiary)

| Policy | Who’s listed | What to check |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Home | Policyholders and mortgage company | A new spouse; the lender after a refinance |
| Auto | Drivers and vehicles | Every driver at home, including a new teen |
| Life | The insured and beneficiaries | Beneficiaries current; no minor named directly |

With no named beneficiary, the money goes to your estate and probate could delay it, according to the III, which suggests a review after a birth, adoption, marriage or divorce. The NAIC guide warns that insurers won’t pay a minor, so ask an estate planning attorney before naming a child.

**Multigenerational homes and college students.** A parent who moves in and drives your cars may need to be listed. TDI’s [renters tips](https://www.tdi.texas.gov/tips/renters-insurance.html) say a dependent’s belongings may be covered by a parent’s homeowners policy while away, usually up to 10% of its personal property coverage, and a TDI column suggests renters insurance off campus; see our [Arlington renters insurance guide](https://www.robinsonlegacypartners.com/blog/renters-insurance/renters-insurance-in-arlington-texas-coverage-costs-and-quotes/).

## Which family life events should trigger a review of all three policies?

**The short answer:** Marriage, a new baby, a new driver, a home purchase, a child leaving for college and retirement each change at least two of your policies, so review all three together when one happens.

Our review checklist, not a legal requirement. Facts from TDI ([changing insurance needs](https://www.tdi.texas.gov/column/plan-for-changing-insurance-needs-through-life.html), April 2023; auto, home and life guides) and III.

| Event | Home | Auto | Life |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Marriage | Add your spouse | Combine drivers? | Update beneficiaries |
| New baby | Revisit liability | Usually no change | Review the amount |
| New teen driver | Revisit liability | Tell your insurer | Usually no change |
| Home purchase | Lender requires it | Ask about insuring together | Size to the mortgage |
| College | Belongings, renters | Where the car is kept | Usually no change |
| Retirement | Recheck dwelling limit | Commute ends | Work coverage may end |

## How do you turn three policies into one family insurance plan?

**The short answer:** Keep the three declarations pages together, line up limits and deductibles, list every driver and household member, check the life amount and beneficiaries, and review everything once a year with one agent.

1. **Keep all three declarations pages together**

They list your coverages, limits, deductibles, drivers and discounts, according to TDI.
2. **Line up home and auto liability limits**

Set both to protect what your household owns, and match uninsured motorist coverage to your auto liability.
3. **Put every deductible in dollars**

Add your wind and hail deductible to your auto deductibles and keep that total in savings.
4. **List every driver and household member**

Include a teen with a learner license, college students and relatives who live with you.
5. **Check the life amount and beneficiaries**

Compare coverage to the mortgage and income, and confirm the names.
6. **Pick one review date each year**

About a month before your earliest renewal, review all three and ask which discounts may apply.

**Renewal dates.** If home and auto renew in different months, ask whether they can be aligned; either way, one yearly review keeps them in step.

**Bundling.** TDI’s [consumer guide](https://www.tdi.texas.gov/pubs/consumer/cb035.html) notes you might get discounts for more than one policy with the same company, so insuring home and cars together may lower what you pay; eligibility varies. We explain [whether bundling home and auto can save money in Texas](https://www.robinsonlegacypartners.com/blog/insurance-discounts/can-bundling-home-and-auto-insurance-save-money-in-texas/) in a separate guide. Under SB 213 (effective September 1, 2025), an insurer can’t make your home or auto policy depend on buying the other from it or an affiliated company, per TDI [Bulletin B-0012-25](https://www.tdi.texas.gov/bulletins/2025/b-0012-25.html).

**One agent.** Robinson Legacy Partners is an Allstate agency near I-20 in south Arlington, so one review can cover your home, cars and the life options we can offer. In Arlington, **36.3%** of residents age 5 and up speak a language other than English at home (Census ACS 5-year estimates, 2020–2024); our team helps in 7 languages.

Bring all threeFor a deeper look inside each policy, see our [statewide coverage gap checklist](https://www.robinsonlegacypartners.com/blog/claims-and-policy-reviews/texas-insurance-policy-review-guide-how-do-you-check-for-coverage-gaps/).

## The bottom line

Arlington families don’t need three separate insurance conversations. They need one: matching liability limits, deductibles you can cover after a hailstorm, every driver listed, and life coverage sized to the mortgage and the paychecks.

Send us your ZIP below or call [(817) 262-5300](tel:+18172625300), Monday through Friday, 8:30 to 5. Bring all three declarations pages, and we’ll walk through them together in the language you’re most comfortable with.

## Other questions Arlington families ask

### Our college student rents near UT Arlington, off Cooper Street. Are their belongings still on our home policy?

They may be. TDI says a dependent’s belongings may be covered by a parent’s homeowners policy while away, usually up to 10% of its personal property coverage, and suggests renters insurance off campus. If they keep a car there, tell us where it’s parked. Our [guide to renting in Arlington](https://www.robinsonlegacypartners.com/blog/renters-insurance/renters-insurance-in-arlington-texas-coverage-costs-and-quotes/) covers the renters side.

### We just moved to Arlington. Which of our three policies do we update first?

All three, on one call. A new house means a new or updated home policy, and TDI lists where you live among auto rating factors. Life insurance usually needs only a contact and beneficiary check. Our guide to [insurance to review after moving to Arlington](https://www.robinsonlegacypartners.com/blog/local-guides/moving-to-arlington-texas-what-insurance-should-you-review/) covers the rest.

### Should our life insurance change when we refinance or pay off the house?

It’s worth a look. TDI says to weigh debts, income to replace and ongoing bills, so a bigger loan may call for more coverage and a paid-off house for less. Our [Texas guide to life coverage and family decisions](https://www.robinsonlegacypartners.com/blog/life-insurance/texas-life-insurance-guide-coverage-cost-and-family-decisions/) explains how to estimate an amount.

### Is a family insurance review different from a coverage gap check?

Yes. A gap check looks inside each policy; a family review looks across them: matching limits, stacked deductibles and the same people listed. We can do both in one review. Our [guide to checking Texas policies for coverage gaps](https://www.robinsonlegacypartners.com/blog/claims-and-policy-reviews/texas-insurance-policy-review-guide-how-do-you-check-for-coverage-gaps/) covers the first part.

## Arlington family insurance FAQ

Should our home and auto liability limits be the same?+

They don’t have to be identical, but they should share one goal: protecting what your household owns and earns. Texas requires only 30/60/25 auto liability, which TDI says might be too low if you cause a multi-vehicle accident, and anything a claim exceeds can come back to you. A homeowners policy carries its own liability coverage. We review both limits together, with uninsured motorist coverage, so neither side sits at the floor.

If hail damages our car and our roof in the same storm, do we pay two deductibles?+

Usually, yes. Hail on a car generally falls under auto comprehensive, which TDI says covers hail, flood, fire and wind, after its deductible. Roof damage goes to your homeowners policy, often with a wind and hail deductible set as a percentage of the dwelling limit, which Texas law requires your declarations page to show in dollars. Add the two numbers before storm season. How any claim is paid depends on your policies and the facts.

When should we tell our insurer about a teen driver in Texas?+

As soon as your teen gets a learner license. TDI says that if you don’t, your company could deny a claim, void your policy or refuse to renew it. TDI adds that adding a young driver usually costs less than a separate policy. Once your teen has a provisional license, Texas DPS limits drivers under 18 to one passenger under 21 who isn’t family and bars driving from midnight to 5 a.m., except for work, school or emergencies.

Does insuring our home and cars together lower what we pay?+

It may. TDI notes you might get discounts for having more than one policy with the same company, but each company decides what discounts to offer and how much they’re worth, and eligibility varies. Under SB 213, effective September 1, 2025, an insurer can’t require you to buy home and auto together, so it’s your choice. For many families, the bigger benefit is one coordinated review of both policies each year.

Can your Arlington office review our family’s policies in a language other than English?+

Yes. Our team helps in seven languages: English, Spanish, Arabic, Hindi, Punjabi, Urdu and Coptic, so a parent or grandparent can join in the language they’re most comfortable with. Our office is at 700 Highlander Blvd, Suite 405, in south Arlington near I-20, open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Call (817) 262-5300 or send your ZIP online, and bring your home, auto and life declarations pages so we can review all three together.
