The Short Version

## Arlington life insurance, in 60 seconds

* **Coverage, costs and quotes for life insurance in Arlington, Texas start with the mortgage and the paycheck.** Owners with a mortgage spend a median $2,019 a month (Census ACS, 2020–2024).
* **Work coverage is a start, not a plan.** TDI says a basic group policy usually pays one or two times salary and typically ends when you leave the job.
* **Term fits needs with an end date.** Permanent coverage lasts much longer, often for life, and costs more, according to TDI.
* **Texas gives you time.** A free-look period of at least 10 to 20 days (TDI) and a grace period of at least one month on late premiums (Insurance Code § 1101.005).
* **Do this:** get a free coverage review with our team in south Arlington, near I-20, with help in 7 languages.

Most questions we get about life insurance in Arlington, Texas start the same way. You just closed on a house off I-20 or Cooper Street, your benefits packet says you have life insurance at “one times salary,” and you’re not sure that would keep the mortgage paid if something happened to you.

This guide uses Arlington’s Census numbers to frame the sizing questions, then covers work coverage, policy types, beneficiaries and Texas protections. For statewide basics, see our [Texas life insurance guide](https://www.robinsonlegacypartners.com/blog/life-insurance/texas-life-insurance-guide-coverage-cost-and-family-decisions/).

## What does an Arlington household need life insurance to protect?

**The short answer:** For many Arlington families it’s a mortgage and a paycheck, since about 54% of homes are owner-occupied and owners with a mortgage spend a median $2,019 a month on housing.

Before policy types, we ask what your family would still owe if your income stopped. Arlington’s Census numbers point to the house and the paycheck.

Source: U.S. Census Bureau, [QuickFacts, Arlington city, Texas](https://www.census.gov/quickfacts/fact/table/arlingtoncitytexas/PST045224) (American Community Survey 5-year estimates, 2020–2024). Citywide figures, not your household.

| Measure | Arlington | Why it matters for life insurance |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Owner-occupied housing rate | **54.3%** | Many owners still have a loan to pay off. |
| Median value, owner-occupied homes | **$304,700** | A value, not a loan balance. |
| Median monthly owner costs with a mortgage | **$2,019** | The bill your family would keep paying each month. |
| Persons per household | **2.74** | The people who depend on the same paychecks. |

Value isn’t what you oweA young south Arlington family with a new loan and a retired couple near Lake Arlington with the house paid off need very different amounts. Start from your lender statement’s balance, not the median value. For the house itself, see our [Arlington homeowners insurance guide](https://www.robinsonlegacypartners.com/blog/home-insurance/home-insurance-in-arlington-texas-coverage-costs-and-quotes/).

## How much life insurance does an Arlington family need?

**The short answer:** Add the mortgage and other debts, the income your family would need replaced, and costs like a funeral and college, then subtract coverage you already have, which is how TDI frames it.

TDI’s [life insurance tips](https://www.tdi.texas.gov/tips/life-insurance.html) say to “consider your mortgage and other debts, how much income would need to be replaced,” plus a funeral and college. The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) agrees in its [Life Insurance Buyer’s Guide](https://content.naic.org/sites/default/files/publication-lig-lp-consumer-life.pdf): “How much life insurance to buy depends on the financial needs that will continue after your death.”

$24,228

a year in median owner costs for Arlington homeowners with a mortgage ($2,019 a month × 12, our math from Census Bureau American Community Survey 5-year estimates, 2020–2024). A citywide median, not a sizing rule.

Illustrative example · not a quote
A south Arlington family owes **$240,000** on the house. One parent earns **$74,000** a year, and the family would want that income for **10** years. They’d like **$60,000** for college and **$20,000** for a funeral and other debts.

* Needs: $240,000 + $740,000 + $60,000 + $20,000 = **$1,060,000**.
* With a work policy at two times salary (**$148,000**), the gap is **$912,000**.
* If the job and its policy end, the gap is the full **$1,060,000**.

Hypothetical numbers; yours will differ.

## Is life insurance through your Arlington employer enough?

**The short answer:** Usually not on its own, because TDI says a basic group policy usually pays one or two times your annual salary and coverage typically ends when you leave your job.

If your Arlington job comes with benefits, you may already have some group life insurance through work. Your benefits summary shows the amount.

TDI’s [life insurance guide](https://www.tdi.texas.gov/pubs/consumer/cb018.html) explains the trade-off: group underwriting “isn’t as strict,” and you usually don’t answer health questions, but “coverage typically ends when you leave your job.” The NAIC adds that with employer coverage, “the death benefit usually is less than you need.”

Sources: TDI [life insurance guide](https://www.tdi.texas.gov/pubs/consumer/cb018.html) (updated December 2025); NAIC Life Insurance Buyer’s Guide (2026). Your plan documents control.

| Question | Basic group life at work | A policy you own |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Typical amount | One or two times salary | The amount you apply for |
| Health questions | Usually none | Usually, and some companies require an exam |
| If you leave the job | Typically ends | Not tied to your job |

Changing jobs or retiring?Line up coverage you own **before** your last day, not after. TDI’s tips note that life insurance costs more to buy as you get older and if you have health problems.

## Should an Arlington family choose term or permanent life insurance?

**The short answer:** Term fits a need with an end date, like a mortgage or kids at home, while permanent coverage lasts for life or to an advanced age, often 95 or 100, and costs more, according to TDI.

Sources: TDI [life insurance guide](https://www.tdi.texas.gov/pubs/consumer/cb018.html) and [life insurance tips](https://www.tdi.texas.gov/tips/life-insurance.html); NAIC Life Insurance Buyer’s Guide; Insurance Information Institute, Life insurance basics.

| Type | How long it lasts | Premiums and cash value |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Term | A set period | Same premium for the term, higher if you renew; most build no cash value |
| Whole life | Your entire life, unless you cash it in or stop paying | Premiums usually don’t go up; part of each one builds cash value |
| Universal life | Until a maturity date, usually age 95 or 100 | Flexible premiums and death benefit; a yearly report shows the cash value |

TDI’s tips suggest term life “while you have a mortgage” or a family depending on your income, for example until your children are out of school. TDI says permanent premiums are higher partly because you’re buying coverage for a longer period. The NAIC says that if you need coverage for life, cash value insurance “may be more cost effective.”

Ask about **convertibility**, which TDI says lets you exchange term for permanent coverage without a medical exam.

## What does life insurance cost in Arlington, and what changes the price?

**The short answer:** We found no TDI, NAIC or Insurance Information Institute average life premium for Texas or Arlington, so your price comes down to your age, health, habits, the amount and the type of policy.

TDI says the cost “depends on your age, health, and risk factors,” that premiums are usually lower for younger people, and that a company can charge more if you have health conditions, smoke or have risky hobbies.

Age

### When you buy

Usually lower for younger buyers, per TDI.

Health

### Conditions and exams

Some companies require a medical exam.

Tobacco

### Smoking

TDI lists it as a reason a company can charge more.

Hobbies

### Risky activities

## Who should Arlington families name as life insurance beneficiaries?

**The short answer:** Name a primary and a backup, avoid naming a minor child directly, and recheck the form after a marriage, divorce, birth or adoption, because a missing beneficiary can send the money through probate.

TDI’s tips say you can name family, a friend or an institution such as a charity, and you “can choose more than one beneficiary and specify how the money will be divided.”

* **Keep it current.** With no named beneficiary, the money goes to your estate and probate could delay it, says the Insurance Information Institute’s [beneficiary guide](https://www.iii.org/article/what-beneficiary), which suggests a review after a birth, adoption, marriage or divorce.
* **Plan for young kids.** The NAIC warns that “insurance companies won’t pay a minor” and suggests leaving the money to your estate or a trust. An estate planning attorney can help you set that up.
* **Look again every few years.** The NAIC suggests reviewing your policy and beneficiaries every few years.

Two policies, two formsCoverage through work and a policy you own each have their own beneficiary designation. Updating one doesn’t update the other.

## What Texas rules protect you after you buy a life insurance policy?

**The short answer:** A free-look period of at least 10 to 20 days, a grace period of at least one month for late premiums and a two-year contestable period, according to TDI and the Texas Insurance Code.

* **Free look.** TDI says Texas policies have a free-look period of at least 10 to 20 days, during which you may cancel for any reason and get a full refund.
* **Grace period.** [Insurance Code § 1101.005](https://statutes.capitol.texas.gov/Docs/IN/htm/IN.1101.htm) requires a grace period of at least one month for each premium after the first; the policy may charge interest, or deduct the overdue premium from the benefit if the insured dies during it. TDI says most policies allow 31 days.
* **Contestable period.** TDI says policies have a two-year contestable period; § 1101.006 requires a policy to become incontestable once it has been in force two years from its issue date during the insured’s lifetime, except for nonpayment of premiums (a policy may also keep a wartime military-service exception).
* **Licensing.** TDI says to make sure the agent and company are licensed. Check an agent with TDI’s [agent lookup](https://www.tdi.texas.gov/agent/agent-lookup.html), or call TDI’s Consumer Help Line at 800-252-3439.

Answer every health question fullyIn the two-year contestable period, TDI says a company can deny a claim over wrong or missing application information.

## How do you get a life insurance quote in Arlington?

**The short answer:** Gather your mortgage balance, income, debts and current coverage, decide how long you need protection, then call or send your ZIP to a licensed local agent who can walk you through the options.

Robinson Legacy Partners is an Allstate agency at 700 Highlander Blvd, Suite 405, in south Arlington near I-20. We’ll tell you plainly which life options we can offer, in English, Spanish, Arabic, Hindi, Punjabi, Urdu or Coptic.

List each paycheck your family depends on and how many years they’d need it.
3. **List other debts and goals**

Car loans, credit cards, funeral costs and college plans all count.
4. **Check your coverage at work**

Ask your benefits office for the amount and what happens if you leave.
5. **Pick a time frame**

Until the mortgage is paid or the kids are grown, or for life.
6. **Talk it through with a local agent**

## The bottom line

Life insurance in Arlington comes down to two local facts: many families are paying off a house, and most depend on one or two paychecks. Work coverage is a start, but it usually ends with the job. Size coverage to the mortgage and the income, and name beneficiaries with care.

Send us your ZIP below or call [(817) 262-5300](tel:+18172625300), Monday through Friday, 8:30 to 5. We’ll add up the numbers with you, show you the life options we can offer, and explain them in the language you’re most comfortable with.

## Other questions Arlington families ask about life insurance

### We just closed on a house in south Arlington. When should we look at life insurance?

Soon after closing. TDI says your lender will require home insurance while you still owe on the house; life insurance is your call, so nobody will remind you. Our [insurance checklist for buying a home in Arlington](https://www.robinsonlegacypartners.com/blog/local-guides/buying-a-home-in-arlington-what-should-your-insurance-review-include/) covers closing, and our [guide to home insurance in Arlington](https://www.robinsonlegacypartners.com/blog/home-insurance/home-insurance-in-arlington-texas-coverage-costs-and-quotes/) covers the house itself.

### We own a condo near the Entertainment District. Should life insurance cover HOA dues too?

It can. TDI’s tips frame the amount around your mortgage, other debts and the income your family would need, and HOA dues are one of the bills they’d keep paying. Add them to the mortgage payment when you count years of support. For the property side, see our [Arlington condo insurance guide](https://www.robinsonlegacypartners.com/blog/condo-insurance/condo-insurance-in-arlington-texas-coverage-costs-and-quotes/).

### Can we review life insurance alongside our home and car policies?

Yes, in one conversation, since life coverage sized to the mortgage belongs next to the home policy. Our [family guide to home, auto and life together](https://www.robinsonlegacypartners.com/blog/local-guides/how-can-arlington-families-coordinate-home-auto-and-life-insurance/) shows how the three fit, and our [explainer on bundling home and auto in Texas](https://www.robinsonlegacypartners.com/blog/insurance-discounts/can-bundling-home-and-auto-insurance-save-money-in-texas/) covers whether insuring them together may lower what you pay.

### We’re in our early 30s in Arlington. Is now a good time to buy life insurance?

Age works in your favor. TDI says cost depends on your age, health and risk factors, that premiums are usually lower for younger people, and that coverage costs more as you get older. Your own health still sets the price. Our [statewide guide to life coverage and cost](https://www.robinsonlegacypartners.com/blog/life-insurance/texas-life-insurance-guide-coverage-cost-and-family-decisions/) explains what drives price.

## Arlington life insurance FAQ

How do I figure out how much life insurance my Arlington family needs?+

Start with what your family would keep paying without you. TDI suggests adding up your mortgage and other debts, the income that would need replacing, funeral costs and college. Then subtract coverage you already have, such as a group policy at work, and savings you’d use. Use your loan balance, not your home’s value. Arlington’s median owner costs of $2,019 a month with a mortgage (Census ACS, 2020–2024) are context, not your number.

Does life insurance from my Arlington employer end if I change jobs?+

Usually. TDI says employer coverage typically ends when you leave your job, and the NAIC warns you may not be able to take it with you. That gap tends to open at a bad time, such as a layoff, a job change or retirement. TDI adds that a basic group policy usually pays one or two times salary. Ask your benefits office what happens when you leave, and line up a policy you own first.

Can I cancel a new life insurance policy in Texas if I change my mind?+

You can during the free-look period. TDI says Texas policies have a free-look period of at least 10 to 20 days, during which you may cancel for any reason and get a full refund. Read the policy when it arrives and check the amount, the term, the premium and the beneficiaries. If it replaces an older policy, the NAIC advises not canceling your current policy until you get the new one.

Should my life insurance pay off my whole mortgage in Arlington?+

It’s a common starting point, but rarely the whole answer. Paying off the loan keeps the house, yet your family still needs groceries, utilities, insurance and property taxes. TDI’s tips list the mortgage alongside income replacement, funeral costs and college. Some families size coverage to pay off the loan; others to keep making the payment for years. A term about as long as the loan is one way to line them up.
