The Short Version

## Bundling home and auto, in 60 seconds

* **Can bundling home and auto insurance save money in Texas? Sometimes: it may lower what you pay, and eligibility varies.** TDI says you might get a discount for having other policies with the same company; each company decides the amount.
* **Texas law protects your choice.** Since September 1, 2025, an insurer can’t make your home policy depend on buying auto from it or an affiliate, or the reverse (SB 213).
* **Coverage fit matters more than the discount.** A lower price that depends on lower limits isn’t the same coverage.
* **One review lines up both policies.** Matched liability limits and hail deductibles in dollars are the real wins.
* **Do this:** ask our team for a free review of your home, condo or renters policy and your auto policy together.

Bundling home and auto insurance gets pitched in ads as an easy win in Texas. It may lower what you pay, and eligibility varies. But a discount line doesn’t tell you whether your total went down, whether your liability limits match, or what you’d pay when hail hits the roof and the truck on the same afternoon.

This guide takes the statewide money question: what a bundle is, when it can lower what you pay, what Texas law changed in 2025, and what to ask. For Arlington families sorting out home, auto and life together, our [guide to coordinating a family’s policies](https://www.robinsonlegacypartners.com/blog/local-guides/how-can-arlington-families-coordinate-home-auto-and-life-insurance/) goes deeper on that.

## What does bundling home and auto insurance mean?

**The short answer:** Bundling means insuring your home and your cars with the same company, often through one agent, which may qualify you for a multi-policy discount and puts both policies in one review.

You still have two policies: a homeowners (or condo or renters) policy and an auto policy, each with its own coverages, limits and deductibles. What changes is that one company prices both, which may add a discount, and one agent sees both.

The Texas Department of Insurance treats this as an ordinary discount to ask about. Its [home insurance discount tips](https://www.tdi.texas.gov/tips/ways-to-save-money-on-home-insurance.html) list “having other policies with the same company (like auto, home, life, etc.)” among discounts to ask about, and its [auto discount tips](https://www.tdi.texas.gov/tips/ask-for-discounts-to-lower-your-auto-insurance-premium.html) say the same of “a home or renters policy.”

Price

### A possible discount

A multi-policy discount may apply. Each company sets its own.

Contact

### One agent, one office

Limits

### One review

Home and auto liability limits checked side by side.

What stays the same

### Two policies

Separate coverages, deductibles and renewal dates.

## Does bundling home and auto insurance lower what you pay?

**The short answer:** It may, but Texas has no standard bundling discount, because each company decides which discounts it offers and what they’re worth, so the number that matters is your own total price.

TDI’s [home insurance guide](https://www.tdi.texas.gov/pubs/consumer/cb025.html) and [auto insurance guide](https://www.tdi.texas.gov/pubs/consumer/cb020.html) say the same thing word for word: “Each company decides what discounts to offer and the amount of the discount.” So we don’t publish a discount percentage; one you see in an ad isn’t your number. Three things decide whether a bundle lowers what you pay:

* **Each policy’s own price.** A discount comes off a price still built from your house, drivers and cars. TDI’s guide to [how auto and home insurance costs are calculated](https://www.tdi.texas.gov/consumer/how-are-your-auto-and-homeowners-insurance-costs-calculated.html) lists “where you live and how much you drive” among the auto factors.
* **Whether you already get it.** TDI’s auto tips say “it never hurts to ask about them and make sure.”
* **What the quote changed.** Lower limits or higher deductibles aren’t the same coverage at a lower price.

TDI’s [guide to reading your declarations page](https://www.tdi.texas.gov/tips/how-to-read-your-auto-or-home-insurance-declarations-page.html) says the page lists your discounts. If your renewal just jumped, read [why Texas home insurance premiums go up](https://www.robinsonlegacypartners.com/blog/home-insurance/why-did-my-texas-home-insurance-premium-go-up/) first. For the auto side, see [what car insurance costs in Texas](https://www.robinsonlegacypartners.com/blog/auto-insurance/how-much-does-car-insurance-cost-in-texas/).

## What does Texas law say about bundling home and auto insurance?

**The short answer:** Since September 1, 2025, Texas law bars insurers from making your home policy depend on buying auto coverage from them or an affiliate, or the reverse, so bundling stays your choice.

Sept. 1, 2025

the date Senate Bill 213 took effect, making it an unfair practice under the Texas Insurance Code to tie issuing or renewing a home policy to buying auto coverage from the same or an affiliated insurer, or the reverse. Sources: [enrolled bill text](https://capitol.texas.gov/tlodocs/89R/billtext/pdf/SB00213F.pdf); [TDI Bulletin B-0012-25](https://www.tdi.texas.gov/bulletins/2025/b-0012-25.html).

According to the Senate Research Center’s [bill analysis](https://capitol.texas.gov/tlodocs/89R/analysis/html/SB00213F.htm), in fall 2024 North Texas homeowners insured by one company “were advised, in writing, that if they did not bundle their auto insurance with the same carrier, their homeowners coverage would be dropped.” Lawmakers answered with Insurance Code sections 551.251 to 551.254. In plain terms:

* **Both directions.** Home can’t be made contingent on auto, or auto on home, including through an affiliated company, at issue or renewal.
* **Three exemptions.** Texas Windstorm Insurance Association (coastal, not DFW), National Flood Insurance Program and personal umbrella policies.
* **State enforcement.** You can’t file a private lawsuit over a violation; the attorney general keeps enforcement authority.

The sections deal with making one policy a condition of the other; they don’t mention multi-policy discounts.

Got a notice that sounds like a forced bundle? If a letter says you must move your auto policy to keep your home coverage, or the reverse, call us and we’ll read it with you, or reach TDI’s Help Line at 800-252-3439.

## When does a home and auto bundle help, and when doesn’t it?

**The short answer:** A bundle helps when it lowers your total price at the same coverage, and it stops helping when the discount depends on lower limits, dropped coverage or a policy that doesn’t fit your house or drivers.

Our review checklist, not a price promise. Each company decides its discounts (TDI); eligibility and amounts vary.

| Your situation | What to do | Our read |
| --- | --- | --- |
| You own your home and insure the household’s cars | Ask for both policies priced together at your current coverage and look at the total. | Worth asking |
| The bundled quote has lower liability limits than you carry now | Keep your current limits in the quote. Less protection for less money isn’t the same coverage. | Gap risk |
| Home and auto renew months apart | Plan the review around the earlier renewal. | Plan the timing |
| You rent, or own a condo | Renters or condo plus auto may qualify too. | Worth asking |

When we review a bundle, we look at the total at the same limits and deductibles first, and the discount line last.

Don’t buy a discount with a gapDropping liability toward the Texas minimum, skipping uninsured motorist coverage or setting a dwelling limit below rebuild cost makes any quote look lower, and moves the risk back onto you.

## How does one review line up your home and auto coverage?

**The short answer:** One review lets us match your home and auto liability limits and put the hail deductibles for your roof and your cars in dollars, which matters more in North Texas than any discount line.

### Liability limits that match

Texas requires at least 30/60/25 auto liability ($30,000 per person, $60,000 per accident, $25,000 property damage), according to TDI’s auto guide. TDI also warns those minimums “might be too low if you cause a multi-vehicle accident or the other driver’s car is totaled.”

Your homeowners policy includes liability too, but TDI notes “the amount of coverage is limited.” Checking both limits together, next to what you own, is the point of the review. See our [Texas car insurance guide](https://www.robinsonlegacypartners.com/blog/auto-insurance/texas-car-insurance-guide-coverage-costs-and-quote-decisions/) and our [Texas homeowners guide](https://www.robinsonlegacypartners.com/blog/home-insurance/texas-home-insurance-guide-coverage-costs-and-buying-decisions/).

### One hailstorm, two policies

Texas had 902 major hail events (one inch or larger) in 2025, the most of any state, according to the [Insurance Information Institute](https://www.iii.org/fact-statistic/facts-statistics-hail), citing the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center. The roof goes through your home policy, where wind and hail deductibles are most commonly a percentage of the home’s insured value ([III](https://www.iii.org/article/understanding-your-insurance-deductibles)). The car goes through comprehensive, which TDI’s [April 2026 storm tips](https://www.tdi.texas.gov/news/2026/tdi04162026.html) say covers damage “from flood, hail, fire, and wind.” See [how Texas wind and hail deductibles work](https://www.robinsonlegacypartners.com/blog/home-insurance/how-do-wind-and-hail-deductibles-work-on-texas-home-insurance/).

Illustrative example · not a quote
A North Texas hailstorm damages a roof and the family SUV on the same afternoon. The home has a **$340,000** dwelling limit with a **2%** wind and hail deductible, and the SUV has a **$500** comprehensive deductible:

* Roof: 2% × $340,000 = **$6,800** out of pocket.
* SUV: **$500** out of pocket.
* Total before either policy pays: **$7,300**.

Each policy lists its own deductible; unless your policy terms say otherwise, plan for both to apply. A discount, if any, lowers premium, not these amounts. Real numbers depend on your policies and the adjusters’ findings.

## What if your home and auto policies renew on different dates?

**The short answer:** That’s common, and it means price changes can arrive months apart, so we review both policies about a month before the earlier renewal instead of reacting to one bill at a time.

A home increase in spring and an auto change in fall can feel like unrelated surprises. Two questions to ask:

* **If I change or cancel one policy, how is the other priced?** Ask before you move anything.
* **How is each one paid?** A home premium paid through escrow changes your mortgage payment; the auto bill changes directly.

Our [Texas policy review guide](https://www.robinsonlegacypartners.com/blog/claims-and-policy-reviews/texas-insurance-policy-review-guide-how-do-you-check-for-coverage-gaps/) has our full renewal checklist.

## Can renters or condo owners bundle with auto insurance too?

**The short answer:** They can ask, because TDI’s auto discount tips name a home or renters policy as the kind of second policy that might earn a discount, and condo owners can ask the same about an HO-6 policy.

TDI’s [renters insurance tips](https://www.tdi.texas.gov/tips/renters-insurance.html) say “your landlord’s insurance won’t cover your personal items,” and a renters policy also includes personal liability. See our [Texas renters insurance guide](https://www.robinsonlegacypartners.com/blog/renters-insurance/texas-renters-insurance-guide-coverage-cost-and-quote-questions/).

As the Insurance Information Institute describes it, a condo owner’s individual policy (often called an HO-6) covers personal possessions and structural elements the master policy doesn’t. Our [Texas condo insurance guide](https://www.robinsonlegacypartners.com/blog/condo-insurance/texas-condo-insurance-guide-ho-6-master-policies-and-coverage-gaps/) explains that split.

## What should you ask before you bundle home and auto insurance?

**The short answer:** Ask for your total price at the same coverage, which discounts already show on your declarations pages, how your liability limits line up, and what one storm would cost you out of pocket.

Robinson Legacy Partners is a local agency in south Arlington, so we can review your home, condo or renters policy and your auto policy in one conversation, with help in 7 languages.

1. **Pull both declarations pages**

They show limits, deductibles, premiums and the discounts already applied.
2. **Write down both renewal dates**

Plan the review about a month before the earlier one.
3. **Price both at the same coverage**

Ask for the total with your current limits and deductibles, so the price reflects the same coverage.
4. **Line up your liability limits**

Check home and auto liability against what you own.
5. **Put hail deductibles in dollars**

Roof deductible plus each car’s comprehensive deductible is one storm’s cost to you.
6. **Ask what happens if one policy changes**

Find out how changing or canceling one policy would affect the price of the other.

See our [home insurance](https://www.robinsonlegacypartners.com/home-insurance) and [auto insurance](https://www.robinsonlegacypartners.com/auto-insurance) pages, or send your ZIP below.

## The bottom line

Bundling home and auto insurance may lower what you pay in Texas, and eligibility varies; there’s no standard discount, and since September 2025 no insurer can make one policy a condition of the other. The lasting value is a single review: matched liability limits, hail deductibles in dollars, and one office to call.

Send your ZIP below or call [(817) 262-5300](tel:+18172625300). We’ll review your home and auto policies side by side, show the total at the same coverage, and point out any gaps. We’re open Monday through Friday, 8:30 to 5.

## Other questions Texans ask about bundling

### Will I lose a multi-policy discount if I cancel my home or auto policy?

It can change. Each company sets its own discounts, so before you cancel either policy, ask how the other would be priced on its own. If you’re selling a house and renting for a while, TDI’s auto tips list a renters policy among the other policies that might earn a discount.

### Is bundling worth asking about if my Texas home premium just went up?

Yes, as one question among several. A higher renewal can come from rebuild costs, roof terms, claims or the wider Texas market; a multi-policy discount is only one lever. Our guide to [why Texas home insurance premiums go up](https://www.robinsonlegacypartners.com/blog/home-insurance/why-did-my-texas-home-insurance-premium-go-up/) walks through the rest.

### Does having home and auto with one company change how a hail claim is paid?

Each claim follows its own policy. The roof claim follows your home policy’s terms and its wind and hail deductible, and the car follows its comprehensive coverage and deductible. Our [guide to Texas wind and hail deductibles](https://www.robinsonlegacypartners.com/blog/home-insurance/how-do-wind-and-hail-deductibles-work-on-texas-home-insurance/) shows how to turn a percentage deductible into dollars before storm season.

### What does car insurance cost in Texas before any discount?

Published statewide averages give context, never your rate; TDI lists where you live and how much you drive among auto rating factors. Our [Texas car insurance cost guide](https://www.robinsonlegacypartners.com/blog/auto-insurance/how-much-does-car-insurance-cost-in-texas/) covers the published figures and what moves them.

## Home and auto bundling FAQ

How much is a home and auto bundle discount worth in Texas?+

There’s no single answer. TDI’s home and auto consumer guides both say each company decides what discounts to offer and the amount of the discount. Your result depends on how each policy is priced on its own, which discounts you already have, and whether the bundled quote keeps the same coverage. Price your home and auto together at your current limits and deductibles, then look at the total, not the discount line. Discounts and eligibility vary, and discounts are not available in all situations.

Can a Texas insurance company require me to buy auto insurance to keep my home policy?+

No, not since September 1, 2025. Senate Bill 213 added Insurance Code sections 551.251 to 551.254, making it an unfair practice to make issuing, delivering or renewing a residential property policy contingent on buying a personal auto policy from the same or an affiliated insurer, or the reverse. Texas Windstorm Insurance Association, National Flood Insurance Program and personal umbrella policies are exempt. Enforcement stays with the state rather than private lawsuits. If a notice seems to require a bundle, call us or TDI’s Help Line.

If hail hits my roof and my car, do I pay one deductible or two?+

Plan for two unless your policy terms say otherwise. The roof falls under your homeowners policy, often with a wind and hail deductible that’s a percentage of the dwelling limit, and the car falls under comprehensive coverage with its own deductible. TDI says comprehensive covers damage to your car from flood, hail, fire and wind. Each policy lists its own deductible on its declarations page, so check both, even when both are with the same company. Ask us to put both numbers in dollars before spring storm season.

Can I bundle renters insurance with car insurance in Texas?+

You can ask. TDI’s auto discount tips say you might get a discount for having other policies with the same company, like a home or renters policy. Whether a discount applies, and its size, depends on the company. TDI also notes that your landlord’s insurance won’t cover your personal items, and a renters policy adds personal liability, so the review is worth doing apart from price. Bring a rough value of your belongings and your auto declarations page.

What should I bring to a home and auto bundle review?+

Bring the declarations pages for your home, condo or renters policy and every household auto policy; they show limits, deductibles, premiums and discounts already applied. Add each driver’s name and date of birth, your vehicle VINs, your home’s year built and roof age, and both renewal dates. With that, we can price both at the same coverage and put your storm deductibles in dollars. Call (817) 262-5300, Monday through Friday, 8:30 to 5.
